Design your facility with employee safety in mind
When looking at the functionality of your warehouse, your main objective should be to identify risks associated with your key operations. It is clearly understood that in order to run a successful operation it is necessary to find the most efficient way to perform each task, but it’s crucial to look at the bigger picture. Before looking at the best ways to make your warehouse more streamlined, you must ask yourself if you have designed an environment that invokes safe working habits.
The first step is to make sure that the expectations you hold for your forklift operators align with OSHA’s. Each year there are 85 forklift fatalities and 34,960 serious injuries. A sure way to cut these numbers down is to make sure that all new hires and seasoned employees are put through OSHA compliant training courses in order to introduce new operators to the proper way of doing things and to help eliminate seasoned operators less favorable habits.
Another option to consider is having an experienced employee trained to facilitate operator training at your facility. This individual goes through a 2-day Train-the-Trainer course that can have them certified for forklifts (sit down, stand up, reach, order pickers) and Aerial Lifts.
Individuals who go through the extensive, 2-day course will walk away equipped with the necessary materials to perform training at their own facility.
